前日の大使館でのイベントの余韻がまだふわりと残る、2024年6月某日の朝。
この日は、六本木リッツ・カールトンにて開催されたニュージーランドワインのマスタークラスセミナーにご招待いただき、参加して参りました。
「今日はじっくり、NZワインの奥深さに向き合える時間になりそうだな」——そんな気持ちで席につきました。
テーマは「Subregional Expressions of New Zealand」
今回のマスタークラスのタイトルは、「Subregional Expressions of New Zealand」。
その名の通り、サブリージョン＝ニュージーランド各地の小地区ごとの個性に焦点を当てた内容です。
講師は、昨年に続き登壇されたコンラッド東京・森本美雪ソムリエ。
実際にニュージーランドで仕事をされていた経験を交えながら語られる解説は非常に具体的で、
エリアの地形・気候から来る味わいの違いが、すっと頭に入ってくる。
「飲んで学べる」とはまさにこのこと！という感覚を味わえました。
テイスティングした9種のワイン
この日テイスティングしたワインは、以下の9本：
- Tiraki Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2023
- Auntsfield Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2023
- Whitehaven Greg Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2022
- Te Pa The Reserve Collection Auntsfield Chardonnay 2022
- Cuvar Iris Collection Chardonnay 2022
- The Landing Chardonnay 2022
- Felton Road Calvert Pinot Noir 2022
- Matahiwi Estate Holly South Series Pinot Noir 2021
- Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir 2020
ソーヴィニヨンブラン、シャルドネ、ピノノワールとそれぞれ同じ品種でも、エリアごとにまったく表情が異なり、土壌・標高・日照時間など、自然環境がワインにどう作用しているかを身体で理解できるようなセレクションでした。
とりわけ印象に残ったのは、やはりFelton Road Calvert Pinot Noir。
口に含んだ瞬間、赤系果実の繊細な香りと、セントラル・オタゴらしいミネラルがしなやかに広がり、
静かに、でも確実に「NZピノの進化」を感じさせてくれた1本です。
セミナー後半は、生産者との“コミュニケーション”
セミナー終盤には、実際に来日されていた生産者の方々が壇上に。
それぞれのワインに対する想いや今後の展望などを語ってくださる時間があり、
終了後には直接話しかけられる自由なコミュニケーションタイムも。
前日の大使公邸イベントとは違い、少しオフィシャル感の強い会場の雰囲気のせいかみなさん緊張した面持ちでしたが、話し始めるとさすがなめらかな口調で、「今この土地でワインを造っている人の言葉」が持つ説得力に、改めて心動かされました。

実はこの日も、Hamish Cooper駐日ニュージーランド大使が会場に姿を見せられ、
冒頭で日本語のご挨拶をいただくというサプライズも！
NZワインに対する熱意を、これほど直接的に感じられる外交官って、なかなかいないのでは…？
前夜のイベントでも感じましたが、大使自らがここまで関わってくださっているというのは、
本当にNZという国の一体感と“本気度”の表れだと思います。
まとめ：知るともっと、美味しくなる。それがNZワインの面白さ
ニュージーランドワインを飲むとき、
「これって美味しいよね」で終わらせずに「どこの、誰が、どうやって」までたどってみると、
その味わいがより立体的に感じられるようになります。
このマスタークラスセミナーは、まさにその「深掘りの楽しさ」を教えてくれる機会でした。
